The ancient traditional Cretan village of Gavalochori is located in the northwestern part of Crete, 35 km from Rethymno and 25 km from Chania. The ancient charm of the village of Gavalochori was created by the architecture of the old stone houses, a folk-art museum and several orthodox churches. The sandy beach of Almyrida is 4km away, suitable for families with children, but also for surfing enthusiasts. The seaside resort of Almyrida offers not only great swimming, but also the opportunity to sit down at some local traditional businesses.

Kalives offers 2 pharmacies, 4 butchers, 3 bakers, restaurants & coffee shops, doctors, dentist, physiotherapist, beauty & hair-salons, 2 gas stations, super & mini markets, clothes shops and a KEP (English-speaking community centre).
