Kokkino Chorio is a small village in the Apokoronas region of Chania, on the northwestern part of the Greek island of Crete. The village is located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of Chania and 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) inland from the coastal village of Kalyves. Kokkino Chorio is known for its natural beauty, traditional architecture and atmosphere.
“Kokkino Chorio” translates to “Red Village” in English. The village earned this name due to the red color of the soil in the area. The red soil is visible in the nearby Drapano Gorge, a popular hiking destination showcasing the region’s unique geological features. According to the 2011 Greek census, the population of Kokkino Chorio is 175 permanent residents.
Kokkino Chorio is characterized by its narrow, winding streets lined with traditional stone houses, many of which have been restored. The village has a small central square with a kafenio (traditional Greek café) where locals gather to socialize and enjoy a cup of strong Greek coffee or a glass of raki, the local distilled spirit. One of the main attractions in Kokkino Chorio is the Glass Blowing Workshop, where visitors can watch skilled artisans create hand-blown glass objects using traditional techniques. The nearby Drapano Gorge is a popular hiking destination known for its red rock formations and vegetation. Kokkino Chorio also serves as an excellent base for exploring the nearby beaches of Kalyves, Almyrida and Georgioupoli, as well as other historical and cultural sites in the Apokoronas region.
