The traditional village of Kournas is built at a height of 250 meters and is located 5km from the beach of Kournas (Kavros, Georgioupoli municipality) and 4 km from the lake Kournas. The northern side of the village offers a beautiful view to the sea while from the southern part overlooks the valley at the foot of the White Mountains
Kournas is a large village perched on a hill overlooking Lake Kournas. It was in the former Georgioupolis municipality, not far from the town of the same name. A working village which has seen less depopulation than some of its neighbours, Kournas is known for its pottery and many popular taverns. The taverna’s seats are largely in the road – it is popular for its specialties of ‘Kokoretsi (grilled offal) and ‘galaktoboureko’ (custard and orange tart).
Kourna Lake is the only freshwater lake on the island, offering pedal-boat sailing, canoeing, mountain bike excursions, hiking, horse-riding and many more activities.
Georgioupolis, as well as being a popular summer resort, is also a traditional fishing village which operates year-round offering a chemist, doctor, bank, police station, school, gas stations, coffee shops, tavernas and restaurants, well-stocked mini markets, and all further essential amenities. Georgioupoli is easily accessible via the national road linking Rethymno to Chania, 38 kilometres from Chania, 20 kilometres from Rethymno.
